Project Overview
Gephart was selected as the design-assist electrical contractor to transform this facility in the heart of the Memphis Medical District. The new Shorb Tower – named after former President and CEO Gary Shorb – includes 18 operating rooms offering state-of-the-art transplant, cardiology, and oncology services to patients. Additionally, the project entailed 95,000 SF of phased renovation including 10,000 SF of demolition and remodeling of existing patient care space for interventional radiology catheterization labs.
Our Work
Gephart’s contributions included:
- Removal and re-installation of helipad
- Demolition of existing 8-story building
- All sitework associated to new construction of Shorb Tower
- Installation of:
- Medium voltage switchgear & customer-owned medium voltage distribution system
- 2 new double ended substations with secondary paralleling
- 2 new double ended substations with automatic throw over main tie
- Viewglass
- Fire Alarm
- Area of Refuge
- Lighting controls
- Operating room integration system
- Self-performed BIM modeling
- Implementation in the field using BIM 360 Glue on all iPads
- Layout using Trimble Total Station for feeders, conduit racks, equipment, imbedded anchors, site lighting, underground duct banks, and stub ups
- Prefabrication of conduit racks, junction boxes, and room-in-a-box
- 2 new 1,500 KW medium voltage generators
- Re-feeding of the existing hospital’s 3, 12,470 V utility circuits through new medium voltage switchgear without any interruption to the existing hospital or campus
Success
- Over $5M in cost savings presented including a complete redesign of the electrical distribution system
- Successfully managed just-in-time deliveries with extremely limited space for laydown
- Over 1.5 M manhours worked and no lost time injuries for the entire project team
- Exceeded our goal of 30% MBE/WBE participation
- Continuation of our strong relationship with Methodist and Turner, beginning with Le Bonheur Physician’s Office building
- Subsequently awarded ATS replacement at Methodist South Data Center and 500 KVA UPS installation at Methodist North
